Breast Reduction

A Breast Reduction, also known as a Reduction Mammoplasty, is designed to reduce the size of a woman’s breasts as well as provide a more attractive breast contour. Indications for a breast reduction include heavy breasts associated with:

• Back, neck and/or shoulder pain
• Poor posture
• Interference with activities of daily living and/or exercise

The surgical technique may vary, however, generally the procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the contour of the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is moved up and excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed. A breast reduction may be combined with liposuction of the chest to improve the overall contour.

The operation may be performed:

• Under general anesthesia on an inpatient or outpatient basis.
• In approximately 2.5 hours.

If you are contemplating weight reduction, try to accomplish your goals prior to surgery. If you are planning to have more children, you should consider postponing a breast reduction.
