Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that can sculpt and remove unwanted localized excess subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. The most commonly involved areas include:

  • under the chin/neck
  • abdomen
  • waist
  • hips
  • thighs
  • inner knees
  • male chest/breasts
  • upper arms

Ideal patients are near their ideal weight with firm elastic skin and desire a permanent improvement in contour. Refinements of surgery including the use of tumescent and super-wet techniques allow larger amounts of fat removal, shorter recovery times and more precise results.

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The duration of surgery depends upon the exact procedure. Small incisions are closed using dissolving sutures. In most cases a special compression garment or girdle is worn over the treated areas for several weeks to control swelling. The majority of the swelling subsides within 3 to 6 weeks. Dimples, ripples and stretch-marks are not improved following liposuction. Excess skin will usually contract over time, depending upon the quality and degree of elasticity of the skin. The final result will be apparent in 6 to 12 months.
